What VELUX skylight size and price range do you need?

As a practical guide, smaller rooms usually suit one compact skylight, while kitchens, living rooms and open-plan areas often need a larger model or multiple skylights spaced evenly across the ceiling.

Quick sizing rule of thumb

For most Melbourne homes, the best size depends on the room size, roof structure, roof pitch and shaft depth. A large skylight can look amazing, but only if the rafters, plaster opening and flashing can be completed properly.

  • Hallways, toilets and walk-in robes: compact sizes such as C01, C04, M02, 1430, 2222 or 2230.
  • Bathrooms and bedrooms: medium sizes such as C04, C06, M04, M06, 2234, 3030 or 3434.
  • Kitchens and living areas: larger sizes such as M06, M08, S06, 2246, 3046, 3055, 4646 or 4672.
  • Long dark areas: two smaller skylights can often give better light spread than one oversized skylight.

Overall size vs internal glass size

Overall frame size is the product size you see in the model name, such as FS M06 780×1180mm or FCM 3055 870×1505mm.

Internal glass size is the visible glazed area inside the skylight frame. This is always smaller than the overall size because the skylight frame, seals and construction take up space.

Important: use the overall size for product selection and roof planning, but use the internal glass size when comparing visible daylight and view through the skylight.
Pitched roof sizes

VELUX FS fixed skylight sizes for pitched roofs

VELUX FS fixed skylights are non-opening skylights for pitched roofs where you want natural light, sky views and a clean internal finish without ventilation.

Tip: For pitched tiled or corrugated roofs, the skylight is only part of the job. You also need the correct VELUX flashing or custom Colorbond flashing, plus proper internal shaft framing and plastering if there is a ceiling cavity.
Opening skylights

VS, VSS and VSE sizes: daylight plus airflow

VELUX opening skylights are chosen when you want natural light and ventilation. The size code still matters, but the correct product depends on whether you prefer manual, solar or electric operation.

VS manual opening

Best for: reachable ceilings, bathrooms, laundries and rooms where simple manual airflow is enough.

VSS solar opening

Best for: high ceilings and rooms needing remote-controlled ventilation without hard wiring.

VSE electric opening

Best for: new builds, renovations and projects where wiring is already planned.

Common opening skylight size codes

Opening skylights use many of the same pitched-roof size-code families, including C01, C04, C06, C08, M04, M06, M08 and S06. Final internal glass size and product availability should be confirmed against the exact VS, VSS or VSE product sheet before ordering.

Flat roof sizes

VELUX FCM flat roof skylight sizes

VELUX FCM skylights are fixed, non-opening glass skylights for flat and low-pitch roofs. They require a correctly built kerb/upstand and custom flashing to suit the roof profile.

Important for FCM skylights: the listed size is the overall throat/frame size. The finished internal ceiling opening, timber kerb, plasterboard lining and flashing dimensions are different. For replacing an old acrylic dome, measure the existing throat/opening and roof curb before choosing the closest FCM size.

🛏️

🏡

Choosing correctly

How to choose the right VELUX skylight size

1. Match the skylight to the roof pitch

Use pitched-roof models such as FS, VS, VSS or VSE for pitched roofs. Use FCM for flat and low-pitch applications where a kerb/upstand and custom flashing are required.

2. Check the roof structure

Rafters, trusses, battens, roof sheets and tiles can all affect placement.

3. Think about the ceiling shaft

A deep ceiling cavity needs a plaster shaft. Wider, splayed shafts can improve light spread.

4. Decide whether you need ventilation

If the room only needs daylight, a fixed FS or FCM is usually enough. If the room needs airflow, look at manual, solar or electric opening skylights.

5. Choose the correct flashing

Tiled roofs, corrugated roofs, TrimDeck, Klip-Lok and flat roofs all need the right flashing approach.

6. Ask before ordering

Send roof photos, ceiling photos and room measurements to Central Skylights before buying.

FAQ

VELUX skylight size FAQs

Are these VELUX skylight prices installed prices?

No. The prices in this guide are from-prices for the skylight product only. Installed pricing depends on the roof type, flashing, ceiling shaft, plastering, access and whether you choose blinds or opening skylights.

What does internal glass size mean?

Internal glass size means the visible glazed area inside the skylight frame. It is smaller than the overall frame size because the frame and seals take up space.

Is a bigger skylight always better?

No. A bigger skylight can bring more light, but it may also need more framing, plastering and heat/light control. In some rooms, two smaller skylights give a better result than one oversized skylight.

What is the most popular VELUX skylight size?

For pitched roofs, M04, M06 and M08 are popular because they suit many kitchens, bathrooms and living areas. For flat roofs, 3030, 3046, 3055 and 4646 are common choices depending on room size.

What size skylight do I need for a bathroom?

Bathrooms often suit compact to medium sizes such as C04, C06, M02, M04, 2230, 2234, 3030 or 3434. If the bathroom needs ventilation, consider an opening skylight.

Do I need a fixed or opening skylight?

Choose fixed if you mainly want daylight. Choose manual, solar or electric opening if you want daylight plus airflow, especially in bathrooms, kitchens, laundries and high-ceiling areas.
