FS or FCM? It Starts With the Roof
A fixed skylight does not open. The key difference between the two VELUX fixed ranges is the roof application and flashing method.
VELUX FS
Fixed skylight for suitable pitched roofs where natural daylight is wanted but ventilation is not required.
- Excellent for living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, halls and high ceilings.
- High-performance double glazing and NEAT coating.
- Suitable tile and metal roof solutions when paired with the correct flashing.
- Choose an opening VS, VSE or VSS instead if skylight ventilation is important.
VELUX FCM
Fixed skylight for flat and low-pitch roof applications, including many modern extensions and selected dome-replacement projects.
- Strong option for flat-roof extensions, kitchens, living areas and hallways.
- High-performance double glazing and NEAT coating.
- Selected sizes can suit replacement of common acrylic dome skylights where dimensions and roof detail allow.
- Choose VCM or VCS instead if you need the skylight itself to provide ventilation.
Natural Daylight Without an Opening Mechanism
Fixed skylights work best when the priority is daylight, sky view and a clean ceiling feature — and the room does not need extra ventilation through the skylight.
More Natural Light
Bring daylight into internal rooms and darker parts of the home without relying only on façade windows.
Simple Fixed Design
No manual winder, motor, rain sensor or opening mechanism is needed when ventilation is not part of the brief.
Double Glazing
VELUX FS and FCM use high-performance double glazing, with laminated inner safety glass in the current Australian range.
Light Control Available
Compatible VELUX blinds can provide extra control over glare, daylight and room-darkening where required.
Fixed is not automatically the right choice for every room. In bathrooms, laundries and kitchens, consider how moisture and ventilation are already handled. If you want the skylight itself to vent the room, compare an opening VELUX model instead.

VELUX FS — 11 Fixed Pitched-Roof Sizes

VELUX FCM — 14 Fixed Flat-Roof Sizes
For flat and low-pitch applications from 0° to 60°. FCM requires custom-made flashing matched to the roof and installation detail.
VELUX FS vs FCM Fixed Skylights
Both give natural daylight without opening. The roof application, construction and flashing approach are different.

|---|---|---|
| Primary application | Pitched roofs | Flat and low-pitch roofs |

The Skylight Size Is Only Half of the Order
The correct fixed skylight still needs a waterproofing solution matched to the roof. Roof material, profile, pitch, water direction and the installation detail all matter.
FS on Tile
For suitable tiled roof applications, the appropriate VELUX flashing system can be matched to the skylight size and roof conditions.
FS on Corrugated, TrimDeck or Klip-Lok
The roof profile changes the flashing detail. Central Skylights can supply matching custom flashing for many metal-roof FS installations.
FCM Custom Flashing
VELUX specifies custom-made flashing for FCM. It should be designed around the roof material, pitch, kerb/upstand and water-flow detail.
Do not order flashing from the skylight size alone. If you are not sure whether your roof is tile, conventional corrugated, TrimDeck, Klip-Lok or another profile, send us a roof photo before ordering.

Use this as a starting point before clicking into a product size.
Choose the Skylight Around the Room — Not Just the Roof Opening
A larger skylight is not automatically better. Daylight spread also depends on orientation, ceiling height, roof structure and the shape of the internal shaft.
Hallways & Internal Rooms
A compact or medium fixed skylight can transform spaces that have little or no access to external windows.
Kitchens & Dining Areas
Use fixed skylights where daylight is the priority and ventilation is already managed by windows, doors or mechanical extraction.
Living & Open-Plan Spaces
Larger FS and FCM sizes can create a stronger sky view and broader daylight feature over central living zones.
Bathrooms & Ensuites
Fixed skylights can provide daylight and privacy. If you also want skylight ventilation for steam, compare opening models.
Bedrooms
Fixed VELUX skylights can brighten dark bedrooms, with compatible blinds available when room-darkening or light control is important.
High or Hard-to-Reach Ceilings
When there is no need to open the skylight, a fixed unit can be a straightforward choice for high ceilings and tall shafts.

VELUX Fixed Skylight FAQs
What is a VELUX fixed skylight?
A fixed skylight is a non-opening skylight designed primarily to bring natural daylight and sky view into a room. In the current Australian VELUX range, FS is the fixed pitched-roof family and FCM is the fixed flat / low-pitch family.
What is the difference between VELUX FS and FCM?
FS is designed for pitched-roof applications from 15° to 90°. FCM is designed for flat and low-pitch roofs from 0° to 60°. Their construction and flashing requirements differ, so choose the family to suit the actual roof.
How many VELUX fixed skylight sizes are available?
The current Central Skylights range has 25 fixed sizes in total: 11 FS sizes for pitched roofs and 14 FCM sizes for flat and low-pitch roofs.
Does a fixed skylight provide ventilation?
No. FS and FCM are non-opening skylights. If you want the skylight to provide ventilation, compare opening models such as VS, VSE or VSS for pitched roofs, or VCM and VCS for flat / low-pitch roofs.
Do VELUX fixed skylights use double glazing?
Yes. VELUX Australia lists high-performance double glazing as standard on the current FS and FCM ranges. Both also use NEAT coating on the outer pane to help reduce cleaning frequency.
Do I need flashing with a VELUX FS skylight?
Yes. Flashing is sold separately and must be selected to suit the roof. The correct approach depends on skylight size, roof material, roof profile, pitch and the installation detail.
Does VELUX FCM require custom flashing?
Yes. VELUX specifies that FCM requires custom-made flashing, which is not supplied with the skylight. Central Skylights can manufacture matching custom flashing for many suitable roof applications.
Can an FCM replace an old acrylic dome skylight?
FCM is often considered for upgrading older dome skylights, and VELUX identifies selected sizes for common dome replacement applications. The existing kerb, opening, roof condition and flashing detail still need to be checked before ordering.
Should I choose the biggest skylight that fits?
Not necessarily. The best result depends on room size, orientation, roof framing, ceiling height and shaft design as well as the physical skylight dimensions. Two smaller skylights can sometimes distribute daylight differently from one very large skylight.
Can I buy VELUX fixed skylights supply-only?
Yes. Central Skylights supplies VELUX skylights for pickup from Noble Park and offers Melbourne delivery subject to the order and location. Builders, roofers and renovators can also order matching flashing. Installation is available separately for suitable projects.
What warranty does VELUX provide?
VELUX Australia currently states a 10-year warranty on skylights and flashings, subject to its published warranty terms and exclusions. Blinds, electronic components and accessories have separate warranty periods.
